Have you been wondering for a while what you really need to do if you like to speak Dutch for real? Maybe you already tried some normal traditional language courses and then probably came to the conclusion that there is only so much that you can learn within a certain period of time.
The most important question is however is: would you like to speak Dutch for real and if so, would you know what to do next? You might believe that if you just concentrated much more on your homework, then your Dutch would be better. And what do you think? Is this true?
Many people confuse learning and studying. Although you'll always learn something when you study, for many things it is not the most efficient way to get where you want. Certainly not for speaking Dutch. It has little to do with harsh study or loads of memorisation....
There is a way however that can quickly bring you to a place where you like to be if you do one specific thing. I love to call it launching your Dutch language rocket. If you like this idea,, then one thing is important. You must be willing to change some ideas that you already have and you must be willing to do some new and different things.
First you need some energy .. Certainly in the beginning!
The first thing that you need is intensity. If you like to launch a rocket, you need a lot of energy and the same thing is true. But... here is the good thing.... Once your rocket is flying, then it needs a lot less fuel to continue.
Most people try to learn Dutch, a couple of hours per week, quite often after work when you are already tired. For launching your Dutch language rocket, you need to immerse yourself for a couple of days in a row. The most important goal here is not that you memorize many things by heart and that you study a lot. The first goal is really simple.. It is becoming more receptive.
Once you are more receptive, you'll absorb new information, because things will make a lot more sense. The problem is that if you only work with Dutch for a couple of hours, you will miss too many things. But.... once you immerse yourself for a couple of days, all of a sudden you'll notice more things. Somehow things will start to feel more logical.
The funny thing is that not many people can imagine that within days you can make so much progress. They assume that there is too much information and that you cannot remember everything within such a long time. But... once you focus on Dutch for a couple of days in a row, great things can happen
V You can understand Dutch pronunciation and you see that there is a clear relation between spelling and how you say the words.
V You see that Dutch does not have too many grammar rules. On top of that Dutch is the closest language to English and you can see it as a kind of German light. Dutch is very close to German, but it is luckily a lot easier!
V You see how easy it is to think in ways that are too complicated and that if you follow just a couple of simple principles you can create hundreds of Dutch sentences al by yourself
V You start to feel better about speaking Dutch and you notice new ways of learning
V Things that you see or hear in every day life start to make sense. You understand why Dutch people say certain things and you know how to respond
V Instead of considering learning Dutch as a chore that you need to do, you can see for yourself that somehow Dutch make your life a lot more convenient and interesting
V Instead of putting yourself down when you do something wrong, you can be gentle with yourself and actually enjoy it for real now that you are making progress
V You see that somehow speaking Dutch can energize you and you feel excited when you learn new things all the time
The most important thing when you lauch your Dutch language rocket is that you create a lot of positive energy that catapults you to new hights. Once you start flying outside of old negative habits and old limitations, many things will be possible.... That is why it is always a good idea that be in a group with other people. It is easier to create and maintain that high energy and you can lift each other up in many different ways....
